upgrade issue

Hi

I plane to upgrade DeltaV system,  One station is upgraded and put it in service to check the system, everything seems normal but after 3 or 4 days ( less than one week) some data links show zero value or communication error (data link show @@@@) and after restart back to normal. Is this status normal? And I/O upgrade is required?

The system version is 6.3, plan to upgrade to 11.3 and controller type is MD

 Best Regards

  • Are you saying that you only upgraded one workstation (the pro plus?) and the rest of system is still at the old version? You should upgrade all of the workstations as soon as possible, then carefully schedule your controller firmware upgrades. Without redundant controllers, an online upgrade is not possible, and since 6.3 and 11.3 are so far apart, compatibilty of the old firmware and new application is less likely. Further consultation with Emerson is needed.

Deltav is not a SCADA. The components work together through carefully integrated methods, and upgrade is all-or-nothing. Any functioning of these components at different versions is purely coincidental .

    Hi Youssef
I upgrade Pro+ but only Operator station Put in service, Can I upgrade all stations without Upgrade controllers firmware (upgrade postponed up to new schedule shut down)? and without firmware upgrade i can not download to controllers (show errors)
    Thanks

Upgrading from V6.3 to V11.3 is a major undertaking, and any missteps may put your plant in an unsafe state. I strongly urge you to seek support/assistance on this upgrade from your local Emerson service organization.

Here are some forum posts from the LinkedIn DeltaV group and Emerson Exchange 365 discussing Deltav migrations which will give you an idea of the challenges faced.

Again please do contact your local Emerson service organization if you have not done so.

THANKS Mr. Youssef and Mr. Chow
  • In reply to MOH:

I agree with MC, this is an undertaking requiring careful planning. After reading the 11.3 release notes, I forgot about this interesting snippet:

"...At least one DeltaV workstation connected to the DeltaV network must remain running the previous version of DeltaV until all controllers have been upgraded. Otherwise, controllers that have not been upgraded may not be able to resolve external references with other nodes. This last workstation may then be upgraded to v11.3.1 after all of the controllers have been upgraded."

So my original statement about getting all workstations upgraded first was incorrect, but I wouldn't let the system run in a hybrid state for any avoidable duration.

    Hi Youssef
I’d appreciate to provide me additional suggestion.

  • In reply to MOH:

If a short down time for the controllers and their hosted processes cannot be scheduled, reverting the pro plus and workstation you upgraded may be your only choice. On line upgrades are possible, but only if you have redundant controllers.
