Cannot Connect to The DeltaV Database Server

Dear all,

I shutdown my server in the DeltaV database administration today for some reason. Now when i tried to reconnect to the server it gave me an error that it can't connect with the deltav server on the Engineering Work Station. In the services , the deltav services were started . Now to remedy the problem i restarted my server machine but the deltav could not start the start up services. Later on when i plugged out all the network out of the switches and turned on the server , the services started and it ran fine but i can't do it all the time. The system is currently in an engineering facility and later on it will be shipped to the site. I need a solution to this issue that is permanent , and i don't want to plug in and out my whole network , everytime this issue comes up.

Thanks and Regards

ASIM

  • Hi,

If you have access, look at CTS NA-0800-0067. I faced a similar issue and this solved it.

Basically it can happen that an OPC client is connecting to the DeltaV OPC server while the machine is starting up. If the OPC service starts up before the DeltaV service, the DeltaV service will not start.

    Dear Experts,

we are facing a database connection problem.

Our Plant: 3 Engineering Station, 13 Operator Station, Hist Server 1 and 2 , BackUp Server.

Since a few days, when we want to open DeltaV Explorer, this message Pops up: "Connected with the database server but failed to open a database connection...........Reasons:Access is denied".

This message appear on both used Engineering Station randomly. One time this message appears maybe one hour later Explorer opens normally.

A few days before this symptoms appears, my colleague ran a "DeltaV Wokstation Configuration" (with DV workstation File, exported on PROP+) on one of our Engineering station.

Anybody knows something about this problen

    Thank you for your help

This is normally an issue with one or more accounts in the system. What version of DeltaV are you using? Are you setup in a domain or workgroup?

The most likely cause I would look into would be the Workstation Configuration activity. Part of this process involves setting a password for the local DeltaVAdmin service account. If the password for this account on your Engineering Stations is not the same as the corresponding account on your ProfessionalPLUS, then this error will be seen. You can resolve by running the ServPwd.exe utility on your Engineering Stations, setting the correct password, and rebooting those two workstations. If you do not know the DeltaVAdmin password on the ProfessionalPLUS, you will have to define a new password, and run ServPwd on every workstation to get everything aligned.

Also, if you are using Microsoft Server 2008 within a domain, and logging in to the operating system with the Administrator account, you must start the prefix with the domain (e.g., MyDomainName\Administrator). If you just use "Administrator," you will login as the local Administrator account, rather than the domain administrator. That can also generate the above message.

I'm not sure how this could have a random component, as you stated above. I was working with a user yesterday on this same problem / same error message (solution turned out to be the second case), and this message turned up every time we opened DeltaV Explorer.

    Best of luck!
  • If you want to fix the local vs domain administrator name question you can go into the local security policy for the computers and change the name of the administrator account to something different.

That being said, unless you need administrator access, you shouldn't always be logging in as an administrator.

    Hello,
thank you all, your diagnostic was true.
    I explain here what happened.
We are working with DelrtaV 11.3.1, with a Domain, and Microsoft Server 2008 .

For a month my colleague changed the DeltaV administrator password, but didn't restart or log of Pro+.
For 2 weeks he my colleague ran a "DeltaV Wokstation Configuration" on one Engineering Station and used the bad local DeltaVAdmin service account.
So the DeltaVAdmin account was locked.
Somebody from Emerson Support checked that this morning.
DV explorer start without any PopUp... :-)

    Manny thanks.

    Greetings,

I have a question that is related to running DeltaV Workstation Configuration. When a new database is created, it is required that this new database be set as the active database, shutdown the database server, and run the workstation configuration application to create a new Pro+. How do I shutdown the database server? Does this involve stopping specific services or perhaps there is a command line to execute.

    Thank you so much.

Under DeltaV Engineering there is an application called Database Administration. Open that and then click File -> Shutdown Database. NOTE: if there are any instances of DeltaV Esplorer or Control Studio it will not allow you to close. You can close those instances by opening Database Connections and then clicking on each one and selecting Disconnect. Once those are all cleared you can shut down the database.
