Looking for input/guidance for AMS deployment

Hi all,

I'm looking for any input/experiences/guidance that can be offered regarding suggestions for establishing a way to manage an AMS database build process that will be undertaken in project execution. I come from an end user perspective and want a clean and functional AMS database come install/commisioning and onto handover.

Quick background of project:

  • Big IO count / multiple facilities
  • (multiple) DeltaV PCS/SIS networks
  • All devices 4-20mA HART
  • Integrated operations vision with predictive maintenance of all instrument assets

My understanding is the EPC will bulk build the plant database from SPI/Intools and other inputs etc and FAT ready for install on site. When it comes time to power up devices, the pre-existing AMS plant database should recognise the device (via HART tag) and associate the device to the pre-built point.

I'm looking for some pointers to develop a strategy to manage the project execution process for the build of the database and in particular suggestions for assurance exercises, interface points (and timing) and where closer governance of the build process needs to take place. I guess this will also include management of the EDDL library during this period to ensure whatever is sitting on site is matched to what has been pre-built in the database with as-shipped data.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

Cheers,

Kyle

  • The second part of your question is on device revision management. Take a look here:

See my Emerson Exchange 2012 paper

You have to rank the priority of device alarms based on the device criticality to the process and the severity of the fault within the device. I'm covering this in my second Emerson Exchange 2012 paper:

Thanks for your speedy reply Jonas,

    1) I had previously found the EDDL device revision management guideline and taken some valuable points from it to form some basis for EDDL management. I would love to know your experience for best practice on this in both execute and operate. We will have Asset Guardian support (and SHM when available), so would this be a solution to EDDL management during operate lifecycle?

2 a) Is there anything I need to be aware of regarding the delay of an EDDL host system file release for a new device revision release? For example, if Rosemount release a new device revision  and associated EDDL file (with new diagnostics). This device is installed on site and interfaced to our AMS, but Emerson have not released the AMS DM system files required for this.

2 b) Does the delayed release of supporting files pose a loss in functionality and how is this best managed ? (Intention would be to monitor device in Alert Monitor and enable new diagnostic alerts).

The 1A-1910 slidepack seems to address the journey we've embarked on so far. As part of deployment of the AMS we will assign roles to continuously monitor and manage the AMS and have begun developing work processes to support this function. I understand that device alert classification can be an encumbersome and costly exercise and specific to the operators own alarm standards.

    3) Other than assigning each instrument a criticality ranking and sitting down and debating which alerts should be enabled, are there Emerson best practice alert classification settings for selected Rosemount devices that could streamline the process? I see when you assign an instrument to Alert Monitor, every available alert seems to be turned on. It would be great to initially cull non relevant alerts before specific prioritisation process could take place.

    On a side note:

Are you in anyway involved with the ISA 108 committee formed for the development of Intelligent Device Management standards? Our project would seem to fit with the timeline and we would be interested to participate. We have registered interest however have not had response from ISA yet.

I would be happy to take this offline to discuss further if you wish: kyle.edwards @ woodside.com.au

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the Exchange this year. Are any of your presentations held is webinar format or am I able to get a copy of the whitepapers mentioned above?

    Cheers,

    Kyle
