Microgrids are collections of generating sources that are coupled to operate as one either connected to or disconnected from (islanded) the main power grid (sometimes called the macrogrid). Being able to independently provide one’s power is becoming popular with standalone entities like colleges or universities, military bases, and remote locations. Hawaii is embracing microgrids and has recently completed a project on the island of Kauai utilizing solar panels with battery storage.
It’s one thing having these distributed generation resources, but you must have something that makes them behave as one and can connect or island them from the macrogrid. That’s where a microgrid controller and corresponding control systems come into play. These systems not only control of all microgrid distributed assets, but also maintain stable operating conditions (voltage and frequency) for customers.
Emerson will be presenting two papers at the event. The first will feature Fred Huff who will present on Tuesday, December 5th at 1:30 pm on the topic “A DCS Can Enhance Microgrid Controls.” On Wednesday, December 6th at 9:30 am, Emerson’s Sheldon Willis will present his paper titled “Microgrid Design Analysis Using Dynamic Simulation Models.” Plan to attend these informative presentations.
