There are a couple of topics we hope to highlight at the show.

SIMULATION - Municipalities are facing the looming retirement of experienced operators in unprecedented numbers. So, at the show, we will be discussing simulation capabilities that can help get new workers up to speed quickly, while reducing the chance of costly errors and environmental violations.

ADVANCED, LARGE-SCALE SCADA FOR REGIONAL AUTHORITIES - Many municipalities are banding together to form large regional authorities in order to reduce operating costs, share capital expenses and improve the efficiency and reliability of services to their ratepayers. The large physical areas bring unique challenges in managing large amounts of data over vast physically-distributed systems, while maintaining the security demanded for these most critical of public services.

This second topic jibes somewhat with the “Dollars and Sense” article I summarized in the post below. As a result, we will be highlighting advanced SCADA solutions that provide the capacity, security and simplified network management solutions needed to effectively implement regionalization strategies.

If you happen to be attending the show, please stop by and pay us visit. Or feel free to discuss these topics here on the Emerson Exchange 365 board.

Dollars and Sense: The Financial Case for Automation

A coworker authored this article that was published in the Clean Water Edition of “Water Online the Magazine.” The title is somewhat self-explanatory, but I thought the article does a nice job summarizing how “advanced automation systems allow municipalities to do much more with less.”

Numerous plants/municipalities incorporate varying degrees of automation, but rarely is it done with a very clear, overarching objective in mind. This article goes on to explain the financial benefits of a unified automation strategy. I’m sure that some of the benefits may seem obvious to many of our community members, but there may be other benefits that are not so obvious.

Hopefully you’ll have a chance to read this article, and share your thoughts and opinions.

#EMRex: Join us in Singapore International Water Week 2012!

Visit Emerson's booth at #K18 in Singapore International Water Week for current trends and advances in monitoring and control of water treatment processing.

I found the section on security to be interesting. We see a lot of consideration given to security by the power generation industry; however, their industry has NERC CIP standards as a powerful motivator. I’m curious how the water/wastewater treatment industries approach cyber security, and the level of importance they assign to it. Hopefully people in our water community can share their experiences here.
