Emerson Global Users Exchange guide for first time attendees

The Newbie’s guide to enjoying and getting the most from the Exchange.

If this is your first Emerson Users Exchange, Welcome! You are going to have a wonderful time, meet a lot of new people (and some old ones you may have known years ago) and learn a lot of new things. You will get a lot from your attendance at the Exchange, but with some planning in advance, you can really soar!

First things first. If you have not gone to the personal scheduler tool and set up your week—stop reading this right now and go get started on that. The personal scheduler is located on the main page after you log in. It gives you the opportunity to select workshops and short courses that are of interest to you and will plan your schedule for the week. This saves you spending your breaks between sessions staring at the big board with all the offerings and trying to decide where to go next.

While you are on the personal scheduler, be sure to look at the offerings from the Education department. You get the opportunity to attend two classes offered by Educational Services free as part of your conference attendance. These classes are offered only by pre-registration and on a first come first serve basis. Pick two and sign up. If you wind up on a waiting list, you have the opportunity to pick a different class or be on the waiting list. Chances are you will get into the class as other people change their schedules around.

Don’t forget to schedule your industry forum on Monday afternoon, the product roadmaps for the products you use and of course, the Meet the Expert sessions on Friday that give you a chance to directly ask questions of the product managers on your favorite Emerson products.

Once you have your days scheduled, start working on the evenings. Monday to Wednesday we have technology exhibits. You will want to make sure you spend at least two evenings with the exhibits. Start your first round of the exhibits by just strolling up and down the aisles and take in all the things that are there. Then you can start plotting who you want to spend your time with and what products you want to look at in depth. And while you are strolling around, get that punch card you were given when you walked in all filled out and turn it in up front. Remember, though, you must be present to win, so once you turn in your punch card, stick around and see more things until the nightly winners are called.

Other evening events include the Music Jam on Tuesday evening after the exhibits close and of course the networking event on Thursday night. Music jam gives our talented members a chance to step up and show off a little. Maybe you are one of those people.

Once you get to the conference you will need to check in and pick up your badge. This is your key to admission for everything. Also, if you have a smart phone, make sure you download our scheduler application at that time. Then you can just check your phone to see what the next class is on your schedule, what room it is located in and where it is on the map of the hotel.

Breakfast and lunch are part of your conference fee, so make sure you make it to both meals. This is networking time, so make sure you get find new people to sit with and meet new people every day. Have a pocket full of business cards to trade along the way. Truth be known, we are a small community so it is always good to meet as many new friends as possible.

Ever wonder how "Best In Conference" works and what it means to attendees?

For several years running now, we've been growing and adapting a way to formally recognize those presenters at Exchange whose work most benefits other users. It's a way to not only show those presenters how much we appreciate their work but also a way for attendees to find and attend a "best of the best" presentation by following nominated sessions.

Over the course of abstract submittal through to presentation review certain presentations that rise to the top of their category will garner a nomination for "best in track". You can even search for nominated presentations by applying that filter in your myExchange personal scheduler. During Exchange those nominated presentations will be evaluated against each other and a "best in track" selection will be made for each track. Awards will be presented to the winners during lunch on Thursday of Exchange. Please make sure you join us Thursday to help recognize the nominees and of course the winners.

It's really important to note that the evaluation criteria used to decide the winners is aimed at finding the presentations that provide the most value to those attending. This means clearly communicated challenges and solutions with quantified results and clear learnings that any attendee could benefit from. It also means that this is not a beauty contest or a sales competition. The prettiest set of PowerPoint slides will not guarantee a high score. Nor will the "slickest" presenter. It's even worth noting that the best or biggest quantified results will not necessarily win. Some of the best information people can get from an Exchange presentation might involve a solid lesson on what not to do. It's really all about explaining why your story is worth telling and how much other people can get out of listening to it.

No matter how unique our business challenges seem to be at times, there is a pretty good chance you're going to run into someone at Exchange who's facing the same problems as you. When you get to benefit from their experience and perhaps have them benefit from yours then we all win. That's what Exchange is all about and this is our way of recognizing those who help the most.

Make sure you consider the Plant-wide solutions track when setting your personal agenda for Emerson Exchange 2014.

By now you have noticed the organization of Emerson Exchange tracks this year into the 4 main categories: Solve and Support, Measure and Analyze, Operate and Manager, plus Final Control and Regulate.

Hopefully you have seen a 5^th category titled Plant-wide solutions. The Plant-wide solutions track was added to cover not just PlantWeb solutions but also papers on enabling technologies that cut across an enterprise. The track was defined as the following:

Broad application of digital-capable devices that provide predictive intelligence using onboard microprocessors, embedded software, and open-standard communications.
Open communication standards linking field intelligence, systems, and applications in a plant-wide network
DeltaV or Ovation automation systems that make the most of PlantWeb’s predictive intelligence
Comprehensive implementation of AMS Suite technologies and other asset reliability solutions

For sure, you should check out the 3 finalists for the PlantWeb Excellence award this year. Plus you will find some good papers in this track which didn’t naturally fit into the 4 main categories above including DeltaV. There are a variety of topics in this track that may interest such as:

Safety compliance with IEC61508 and IEC61511
SIL-3 HIPPS system
DeltaV migration and DCS modernization stories
Peakvue & Wireless technology enablers
Process optimization papers
Plus several others

Again, make sure you consider the Plant-wide solutions track when setting your personal agenda for Emerson Exchange 2014.

Meet the Expert Sessions at the Exchange

If you have specific questions or just want to know more about any of the eighteen (18) topics like, Wireless Best Practices, Selecting Right Flow Technology, Delta V, Valve maintenance planning, etc., please plan to attend the Meet the Expert Sessions on Friday morning. I have attended these sessions in the past and they have been very useful. I attended the Cyber security session last year and learned some of the online safety tips I can follow when using the computer or any other smart devices.

Conflict Resolution

My neighbor and good friend Hayden Hayden has just written a book entitled "Conscious Choosing for Flow" and I would like to recommend it to the community. It isn't a technical book, but rather a book on ways to deal with conflict. Hayden is a successful entrepreneur and currently a coach for executives. His thesis and the subtitle of the book is "Transforming Conflict into Creativity." He says his book is targeted at business managers and HR professionals, but I think his message can be more broadly used than that. Whenever people interact, there is a good chance there will be some conflict somewhere along the way. Rather than looking to conflict management or negotiation, he offers a third way that he describes as conflict transformation. He believes and describes how you can consciously choose to turn any conflict into something positive, dynamic, and creative. His approach is built around STAR... Stop, Think, Act, Review, which is not too far from the DMAIC approach that many engineers know and use. And not just dry reading, it includes exercises you can use to explore or validate the concepts as they are presented. It can be as useful to your personal life as it is to your professional life. His book is available on Amazon in paperback and kindle versions.

Content Based Analysis during PAS modernization

Are there any examples of where analytics were applied to a legacy PAS configuration prior to modernization? Specifically, was the legacy configuration migrated via bruteforce or was an effort made to understand the content of the configuration? Were similar loops identified? Were custom loops identified? I am seeking input as to what analysis steps are taken to translate a legacy configuration to DeltaV.

Changing Faceplate SP button range

On the default emerson faceplate the sp up and down button change the sp of the PID block by 1 or 1/10 depending on how many decimal places are chosen in the PV scale. I would like to change this to be a % of the sp scale. Here is the modified code, Range is the new variable. I have tried many different data types and still come out with a type mismatch error when I try to use the buttons. Am I on the right track (I kept the if statement there just to minimize the adjustments to the original code)?
