I use Hootsuite and have columns with filters of editors/thought leaders and #PAuto/#ISAuto hashtag searches along with another for Emerson / LBP folks. The lists are subscribable if you want to see them as well. Hootsuite also connects with my LinkedIn status updates & groups, and Facebook pages & groups.

I think LinkedIn is much more focused around the connections you have and the groups you joined. The discussions are much deeper. Twitter is kind of like the newspaper (for those older than the internet! ) and LinkedIn is more for what's going on with your peers.

Here's one datapoint of research showing B2B (business-to-business) websites getting most of their visits from social networks now from LinkedIn.

I will say that LinkedIn has made amazing progress over the last year with all the original content they have and they may ultimately become the destination of choice for news and peer interactivity... time will tell!

Re: Engineers and Social Media

Twitter is an interesting mix of personal and professional, from what I've seen. All of Emerson Exchange was tweeted, after all.

There seems to be much more 'interoperability' available for Twitter than LinkedIn posts. I haven't made the jump myself, however.

I believe Linkedin is used for work-related networking while Facebook and Twitter is more for private networking. Was there any data in the research confirming or denying this?
