Together at last: Gateway AP to offer both Wi-Fi and WirelessHART

To fully address customers' needs for standards-based, reliable, scalable, secure and pervasive wireless solutions for both field network and plant operation solutions, Emerson Process Management will release the Cisco Aironet 1552WU Gateway Access Point (AP), which was jointly developed by Emerson and Cisco.

Offering both Wi-Fi and WirelessHART in the same device, the Gateway AP is the result of development efforts over the past year by Cisco and Emerson to deliver a state-of-the-art multi-protocol wireless access point that simplifies installation without sacrificing wireless best practices.

The Gateway AP creates a self-healing and self-optimizing wireless mesh network that mitigates the impact of wireless interference. It offers a flexible, secure, and scalable network for high-performance mobility across large process environments.

The integrated 802.11N dual-radio AP supports 2,4 MHz and 5 GHz signals through separate antennas allowing for the greatest deployment flexibility and signal stability.  The WirelessHART radio signals are sent through a separate Radio Frequency port. The attenna is attached by a 50-foot cable to allow flexibility in placing the antenna.

The Gateway AP supports the same features and protocols as the Smart Wireless 1420 Gateway, including HART IP, Ethernet IP, and native DeltaV. It will be upgradable as new Gateway software releases become available.  Availability is expected in the fourth quarter of 2013.
