3D scanners take guesswork out of measuring bulk solids

Measuring bulk solids in large vessels, tanks, or bins can be tough, especially in dusty conditions or when the material surface is sloping or uneven.  But during the technology exhibition at Emerson Exchange in Orlando, attendees saw how Emerson is making it easier:  the Rosemount 5708 Series solids scanners.

“These new instruments use acoustic measurement and 3D mapping technologies,” explained Eran Perlstein of Emerson Process Management. “The scanner maps the uneven surface that’s typical in these applications, enabling users to see the minimum and maximum level, the total volume, and even a 3D visualization of the surface. That makes it much easier to get the accurate, reliable measurements needed for process and inventory control.”

Unlike laser-based technologies that can need several hours to take measurements and require the process to be shut down, Rosemount 3D solids scanners provide continuous volume measurements. They can measure practically any kind of material, including fly ash and materials with a low dielectric, and their self-cleaning design requires low maintenance even in the dustiest environments.

“They’re great for measuring solids in silos, large open bins, bulk solid storage rooms, stockpiles and warehouses,” added Perlstein. “Users can choose the model that works best for their application – whether that’s measuring just level or both level and volume.”
