Will we ever get a modern graphics engine?

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm tired of fighting the outdated iFix graphics engine in DeltaV operate.  When can we ever hope to dump this ancient dinosaur and get something that actually scales correctly?  Say, something built on vector graphics and not this unintelligible logical units disaster?

Coming in version 14 - when will it be released for development / offline systems so we can start playing with it?
  • In reply to John Rezabek:

Hoping also that you can find tag references for modules on graphics, this is a basic DCS necessity that other systems have had for 20 years.
  • Any info on scripting capabilities??
  • In reply to gamella:

Scripting is still possible but a lot less of a need from Operate where you had scripting for pretty much everything (Opening FP, Writing SPs/OUTs, Changing Display, Creating Dynamos, etc). Every one of those items listed in parenthesis within DeltaV Live can be done with little to no scripting.

The script language is TypeScript which is a superset of JavaScript (HMI based on HTML5, Scalable displays with no distortion...Finally!)
  • Thanks Matt and everyone for a great discussion on graphics. As Matt said and shared in the links mentioned, we’re working on advancing our graphic engine and will be sharing more in-depth information in the near future.
In the meantime, if you’re an Emerson user and interested in learning more, send me an email at [email protected] and I’d be happy to connect you with people that can answer your questions.
  • Thanks to Matt and Victor! It sounds like v14 will be leaps and bounds ahead of what we have now, and so far I'm impressed! I can't wait to see it and start learning TypeScript (although like you say Matt, I hope we don't have to use it too much).
Is there any information yet on migrating displays from previous versions? We have a lot of custom dynamos, faceplates and detail displays, all with significant amounts of VB underneath, and I'm wondering how that's planning to be addressed.
  • In reply to eXcelonPrime:

    Hi ,

DeltaV Live will include a migration tool that will bring most things over, with a few exceptions. One of the challenges is custom scripting. When dynamos have a lot of custom scripts, they will come over as text to be used as reference for TypeScript. If there is already a GEM in DeltaV Live that performs the functions of those dynamos, or the user has created a GEM that does what the dynamo did, then a mechanism for mapping dynamos to GEMs will also be available. This alternative allows users to create GEMs in DeltaV Live using all the new functionality and then replace dynamos with those GEMs during migration, via a lookup table.

There will be more information about DeltaV Live in the next few weeks and we’re excited to share more publicly with you. Until then, reach out to Victor O’Brien above and he’ll be happy to help connect you with additional information.
