HI!
I was introduced to DeltaV DCS systems during my undergraduate studies a few years ago and now I have renewed interest in this technology and I am looking for ways to refresh my knowledge. I want to set up my own DeltaV DCS "lab" in my basement. I checked ebay for complete DCS systems and there are very few for sale. Besides, they dont mention anything about software for it.
My question to the community is:
What would be a good model of DeltaV DCS for my project? I certainly would not be able to afford the latest version.
Do you know where I can buy used working hardware and software from? I already checked Ebay. Not much luck there.
Should I always contact the vendor for software? or is the software downloadable from the internet? Are drivers freely awailable too?
Thanks in advance friends, I want to get hands on experience in DeltaV and I really want to set up this system at home. Hope you guys can help!!
Cheers!
Azmil
Azmil,
There is necessary to clarify what you would liek to do on "real" DeltaV HW. Maybe you dont know, but there exists DeltaV Simulate SW ( see link below ) which maybe can give you what you are looking for ( DeltaV Simulate, Standalone VE9921 ).

I think it can be too expensive with DeltaV HW + experience ( 100 DSTs ) licence:

For price estimation please contact Emerson LBP ot Emerson office in your World area.
BTW - I think there are enough "study" materials on the internet ( videos, documentation, specialized websites ) to get overview without "real" system. In case of interest I can guide you thru possibilities.

Hello Radek,
Thanks a lot for your reply. I have a little experience working with DeltaV DCS at the lab and I want to advance my knowledge and experience in this area. I would like to gain hands on experience configuring, programming, and implementing control sysetems in DeltaV. I am not sure if Simulate can give me thes experience.
I want to be a process control specialist or engineer someday and I have to offer something solid to potential employers. That is why I want to set up the HW at home, and have some basic control loops going, just for the sake of learning...
I dont know if it is possible, but I whonder if I can also write custom software which can run on DeltaV hardware. If its possilbe then I can develop my know-how in this area too.
I know it sounds a bit crazy but I think my passion and abilities are in process control and I really liked working with DeltaV DCS's. Thanks again Radek, appreciate your reply.

Azmil -
There is an online simulation you use if your goal is to learn more about process dynamics and how DeltaV interacts from an operator perspective. See: www.processcontrollab.com
Greg McMillan from the ModelingAndControl.com blog established this site.
In reply to Aaron Crews:
I think "Plantweb Experience" is the cheapest way into DeltaV with hardware. They have a 100 DST PRO Plus system but you would still need to buy the controller, etc. You can check out the data sheet on Emerson's site at www2.emersonprocess.com/.../PDS_PlantWeb_Experience.pdf.
DeltaV simulate is a good experience and great training tool, even without the hardware.

In reply to Travis Neale:
One addendum to Aaron's answer. I checked the ProcessControlLab site and the simulations are not currently operational. I'm checking with Greg and the team who put the site together to see if the simulations can be re-enabled.
In reply to Jim Cahill:
You can also check next link:
www.controlloopfoundation.com/index.aspx
according description "Control Loop Foundation contains workshops that allow the reader to get hands on experience through this web interface. Once a lab is selected, then you may access workshop directions and information on the simulated process. Also, an interactive workspace is provided to perform the lab. A video of the expected results may be viewed by choosing Solution."
My recommendation would be to get a co-op position or even a volunteer assignment with a company or education institution that you know has a DeltaV DCS development or training system. Probably some of the people you are networking with here or elsewhere would know of such opportunities in your area. You could get some hand-on experience with some "real world" applications. Good luck.
In reply to Dan:
Thank You Radek, Aaron, Travis, Jim and Radomir, Dan,
You all got me thinking. I think I will start with DeltaV Simulate. Once I have refreshed my knowledge and I am comfortable with it I could proceed to 'Plantweb Experience' with real hardware while trying my luck with a co-op position!
Thanks again guys. I shall post my progress on this forum!
Hi Travis,
I am contemplating to get DeltaV Simulate ( or simulate pro). in addition to this, do you think I will have to have some simulation software like HYSYS? Or does DeltaV Simulate come with its own simulation modules? and do you know how good the documentation / literature for this software is?
Thanks!
Unfortunately there is no internal process simulation modules built in DeltaV. Mynah is the defacto standard around here for process simulation with DeltaV. Their MiMiC Simulation Software is pretty easy on the face of it, and would do good especially for learing, but true process simulation is an art, and often quite complex.
Does anyone know if Mynah has a demo version available for trail with DeltaV simulate?
I was looking at the Mynah website and I couldn't find any information regarding the sale/licencing of this MiMic software. Does anybody know how much it will cost? Just a ball park figure will do...
Try to contact Mynah directly - I am sure they can give you exact info regarding price and also will be able to offer variant regarding your needs.
@Travis
There is no demo available from Mynah, but I have already informed Martin Bruetti about this topic ( without response yet ). We will see....
Maskara, please contact me at [email protected]. We can get you pricing for MiMiC and look into a demo license as well.
In reply to Mart Berutti:
Hello Mart,
Thanks for your reply.
I will be getting DeltaV simulate after I return from Vacation next week. I will get in touch with oncei play with it a little. That way I will be in a better position to see if MiMiC is fit for my use.
Have a agreat new year!!
I wanted to update everyone that the Process Control Lab is no longer open.
