Compatibility Inquiry – DeltaV Redundant Serial Interface Card HW Revision E vs G

Dear Members,

Technical clarification regarding compatibility of DeltaV redundant Serial Interface Cards installed in our running DeltaV system.

Existing healthy/redundant card details:

• Model: KJ3241X1-BA1
• Description: Serial Interface Card, 2 Port RS232/RS485, Redundant
• Series: Series 2
• Part Number: 12P2506X062
• Hardware Revision: Rev G
• Firmware/Software Revision observed in diagnostics: 1.53

Replacement card details:

• Model: KJ3241X1-BA1
• Description: Serial Interface Card, 2 Port RS232/RS485
• Series: Series 2
• Part Number: 12P2506X042
• Hardware Revision: Rev E
• Firmware/Software Revision observed in diagnostics: 1.19

System behavior after insertion of Rev E card into redundant pair:

DeltaV Diagnostics indicate the following:

• HwRev = Unsupported
• Model = Unknown Card Type
• Status = Bad – Configuration Error
• Switch_Avail = Unavailable – missing standby
• Pair Integrity = BAD
• Overall Integrity = BAD
• State = Standby

Although the card is physically detected by the system, redundancy is not established and the card is reported as unsupported/unknown.

Additional information:

• We currently have two (02) available cards with HW Revision E and P/N 12P2506X042.
• Existing running card in service has HW Revision G with P/N 12P2506X062.
• Both cards are labeled KJ3241X1-BA1 Series 2 Serial Interface Cards.

Kindly clarify the following:

1. Are P/N 12P2506X042 Rev E and P/N 12P2506X062 Rev G mutually compatible in redundant configuration?
2. Is HW Revision E supported in DeltaV version 12.3 ?
3. Can firmware/software of Rev E card be upgraded to achieve compatibility with Rev G card?
4. Is there any required DeltaV hotfix/service pack/device definition update for recognition of Rev E cards?
5. Can two HW Revision E cards operate together as a redundant pair independently?

Your technical guidance is highly appreciated.

  Have you tried flashing the firmware on the card? The release notes for 12.3 (which is quite old I might add) looks like the firmware needs to be at least Rev 1.53. You should be able to upgrade via the "Controller Upgrade Utility". Otherwise, please call into the GSC for support and they can help figure out in more detail what is happening. As far as I can tell, this should work, and you probably just need to upgrade the card.

  One thing i will look at first is if the hardware is supported on the version release. I would also assume that the cards were flashed during the project conception hence you may want to check your ProPlus or Engineering Workstation for installed hotfix bundle. Cards and controllers are typically flashed to the latest version of DeltaV and seeing you are v12.3, it might be that you got a v 13 and above flashed cards.

  The 12P part numbers change when there is a component modification. The KJ number will change when there is a functional change to the product that is of significance, though it may still be compatible with previous units. I would expect that if the KJ numbers are the same, these parts should have the same functionality. As suggested, confirm you have them flashed to the same firmware applicable to the installed firmware of your system.
  
  DeltaV attempts to make sure that new versions of controllers will work with existing (older) versions of IO firmware to allow for online upgrades. For redundant IO cards, you should have the same version of firmware and one supported by the controller version.
  
  As Matt suggests, a GSC call would be your best path if the cards still don't work after getting them to the same valid firmware.
