Next Gen Smart Switches

I have been having some trouble with commissioning of some new "Next Gen" switches that are replacing old existing smart switches.  I was told not to use "commission as replacement" in this case, so here are the steps I took:

- Unassigned the current smart switch control module

- Deleted the module from the server

- Deleted the CM from the offline side

- Powered off old switch and replaced with new "Next Gen" switch

- When new switch showed up in "Decommissioned Switches" in NDCC, I selected it and selected "Commission"

- Entered the switch name and password (x2), plant area etc. and clicked "Commission"

- DeltaV does it's thing up to the point of the required module download - where it fails and says "module must be downloaded manually"

- I manually download the module, but the commissioning process does not continue (i.e. "updating properties of the switch" etc.)

Now the switches appear as normal in NDCC, but I am unable to access via telnet because the password seems to be corrupted??? (NO the default doesn't work, and NO it wasn't typed in wrong)

Does anyone have any thoughts?  Is the only recourse now to reset the switches to factory defaults and recommission them again??

Thanks

Don

  • What version of DeltaV are you running. The next gen switches in my experience will not commission in versions less then 14. I also had problems commissioning our switches in Version 15 and I did have to factory reset the switches and start over. Our ProPlus had an issue with a service not running sorry I can remember what the service was. I ended up calling GSC. I was able to commission from a professional station.

For v13 there is a workstation hotfix required to use them, ws40 I believe.

Note we also believe the control module representing the switch needs to be imported and downloaded before the attempt to commission as the NDCC commission process writes a password to a parameter of that module through the process.

That has been our experience anyway. Good luck

The hotfix provides a new Switch module class to import. Delete the old switch module instance and recommission. The new class will be used and the module will properly bind to the switch.

When our team first got one of these, we had not imported the new Module that Andre indicated, and it failed to get into the system, we tried to get in as you did with no success, so we ran the reset, added the updated fhx and then recommissioned as new, and had no issues. I think your best bet is to reset it, very easy to do
